A Brief History

It was 1975, and Reg Cosgrove was playing golf socially at Rosebud, when he had the thought that it would be great to start up a Golf Club at Watsonia RSL. He went to Ron Barry and asked if he was interested, and the answer was yes, and the rest became the history of the Watsonia RSL Golf Club.

The RSL did have a golf club years before, So Reg & Ron looked over the old paperwork to work out how they could start a new Golf Club at the RSL.

At the first game of Watsonia RSL there were 11 players some of which were, Reg Cosgrove, Ron Barry, Huey Spicer, Bruce Spicer, Peter Watson, Ron Crombie and Ron Fyfe, just to name a few.

The 19th hole was rotated amongst the players and funded by the host, sandwiches, party pies and of course beer to wash down the lot.

A few years later new players joined the Golf Club, Eric Reynolds, Harry Shaw, Mick Deveson, Brian Johns, George Patterson, Larry Vine and Snowy Livock just to name a few.

By 1985 the club had reached between 35 - 40 players, all who were financial members of the Watsonia RSL. The 19th hole had soon became to big for any of the players backyards and so they relocated to the Simpson Army barracks and then eventually to our old home at the RSL.

Some 32 years later the Golf Club goes from strength to strength, we average 38 players a game and have over 45 members on the books.
